The society is for academic authors whose scholarship and learning materials advance human knowledge.
The society has three purposes: To promote excellence in academic authoring. To bring recognition to academic authors. To advocate the interests of academic authors. The society was created in 2002 by John Vivian, himself an academic author. The society was built around the sa2 news and information web site.
Members include both academic authors and individuals aspiring to academic authorship. Associate membership is available for individuals with professional interests in academic authoring but who themselves are not authors.
