2004 TALBOT PRIZE

The Society of Academic Authors established the William Henry Fox Talbot Prize, the "Talby," to recognize excellence in visuals in textbooks and other learning materials.

The prize is named for William Henry Fox Talbot, a photography pioneer, who was the author of the important 1844 text The Pencil of Nature. Talbot's book is considered the single most important book of photographs ever produced. The Pencil of Nature, published in London by Longman, was the first commercially published book ever illustrated without the aid of an artist.

Nominations may be made in several categories:

A panel of judges, composed of veteran authors, educators and graphics experts, will decide the winners. Prizes may not be awarded in every category every year.

To be considered for nomination, authors should contact sa2 by email with the title, publisher, copyright year, and name and email address of the sponsoring editor. The society then asks the publisher to make the nomination. There is no expense to the author, but authors must an sa2 member.

The nomination deadline for the 2004 Talbot is Januarry 30, 2004, with the award in 2004. Eligible were works with a 2003 or 2004 copyright.

Presentation of the prize, which is in the form of a certificate, is at a site of the author's choice. For co-authors, multiple plaques are available at the presentation. A certificate also is presented to the sponsoring editor.

The award of the prize is announced to national news media that cover education and publishing and to other media of designated by recipients.
